About the service
The energy system is set for an unprecedented level of change in the years ahead – and so is the way that most buildings are heated (or at least what they are heated with). Natural gas is the largest source of final energy demand in domestic buildings today and is mostly used for thermal comfort – space and hot water heating – but that must change in a world with net-zero CO2 emissions.
Electricity is only one part of the solution, particularly in the existing stock where there will be many instances where this option is not compatible physically or technically / overly burdensome financially / disliked by consumers operationally – and this is where the role of decarbonised, high efficiency gas heating comes in.
Despite the pragmatic if not popular position on the future role of gas alongside energy efficiency, electric and district heating – players in the natural gas sector are in a race against time to secure the long-term role for gas-based heating in buildings. In recent years their activities have gone into overdrive with the development of new components and appliances, new fuels/energy sources and a rapid expansion in biomethane production, laying the foundations for entire new industry sectors, and by forming new alliances and collaborations to make the case at the highest levels of the debate. The future of heating is uncertain – there will be a market for decarbonised gas heating beyond 2050, but the key questions are where, and how much?

LCP Delta’s Gas Heating Service provides data, insight, analysis and opinion that allows you to develop the best approach to capture opportunities for high efficiency gas appliances, low carbon gases and hydrogen for heating across Europe.

To meet long term climate targets, the energy use of buildings must change. Space and water heating are key building energy loads that must be decarbonised significantly compared to today.
CHP, thermally-driven and hybrid heat pumps, fuel cells and boilers fed with decarbonised gases like biomethane and hydrogen are all key pieces in the puzzle which will slot in far more effectively than competing heating options in areas and regions where the others won’t fit.
