Report Summary: Hydrogen as an Electricity System Asset

National Grid ESO commissioned Delta-EE to complete an analysis of the potential impacts the burgeoning hydrogen market could have on the electricity system and the implications for FES 2022. This Summary Report highlights some of the key findings and conclusions from the 6-month project, completed in May 2022.

A timely piece of work, the project investigated the potential of hydrogen to provide cross vector energy system benefits. Focusing on how electrolysers can support the production of green hydrogen and thereby increase flexibility of the electricity network, the project took used combination of literature review/interviews and workshops to gather data relating to generation, storage, distribution, and the different end uses of hydrogen.

The project developed a set of 10 Value Chains for future Hydrogen deployment up to 2050 which were then modelled in further detail to determine a range of hydrogen costs.

  • The project analysis includes consideration of the following
  • Reduced curtailment of renewables
  • Flexibility services from electrolysis
  • Power generation – CCGTs/OCGTs run on hydrogen.
  • Inter-seasonal storage
