Quantifying the heat flexibility gap

The Heat Flexibility Gap project for Thermal Storage UK aims to quantify how much flexibility is to be required in 2035 as a result of the electrification of heat and transportation and the decarbonisation of the electricity supply.

LCP Delta modelled power supply and demand at the GB level under different scenarios to optimise electricity demand profiles and estimate the benefits and savings to consumers and the wider power system.

Results of the analysis show that the additional flexibility from thermal storage has the potential to shift significant demand away from peak periods and into lower price periods, leading to lower costs for heating and a reduction in the curtailment of renewables.
